lyrics below. from the album Waking Hours. i cannot believe the studio version isnt on youtube. this is the song most of us dedicated fans first heard nearly 20 years ago. we love you Justin.
photo is my own.

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
And janitors padlock the gates for security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show
And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen, "Time please, you know we can't serve anymore"
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead, and every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
the martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same movie every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
just survive constant "Action. replay"

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

and bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While 'Angry-From-Manchester' writes to complain about
All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains in the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

  • listening to this amazing song brings tears of disillusioned despair to my eyes :(

  • Is it wrong that I listen to this, and it was made before I was born?

  • @ChrisLikesFreeStuff [Facepalm] All you should listen to was made before you were born.

  • @ChrisLikesFreeStuff no mate, just goes to show how music has gone down the shitter, all you need now is a catchy 30 second hook for ringtone downloads sometimes i dispair

  • This is a beautiful, melancholic song.

  • One of the greatest poets of our age, the brilliant Justin Currie and the rest of the boys that made the music to the heart rending lyrics of Del Amitri.

  • Fantastic. I love their music and can hardly believe I got into them from a movie trailer. :)

  • Phenomenal band..this is really good music.....back then, and now.

  • @ChrisLikesFreeStuff Not at all.))

  • Quality tune.

  • there's nothing or no-one as miserable / humourous as someone from scotland! being rained on virtually 365 days a year would explain it. I know, I'm Irish.

  • @paulos3000000000000 Of course it is. All of those things have happened and have been happening since the beginning of time. Markets have crashed, we have seen wars, work stoppages, and natural disasters before. And just like in the song, nothing stops, it just all starts over again the next day.
