If you mean when he was due for execution, he wanted to die so as to escape all the pain and misery of the world, as he could feel it all the time "It's like pieces of glass in my head." As for when he was found with the bodies of the girls, he said something that would have sounded like "I'm sorry. I regret it, but I did this." He was simply not smart enough to say that he hadn't done it or prove that he hadn't.
I will admit I had tears in my eyes when I first saw this movie. It was sad. John Coffey, an innocent man, was going to die and there was nothing no one could do to help this man with such a wonderful gift.
That is one of the saddest scene's in Green Mile. You could tell that Paul Edgecomb didn't want to give the order to execute. Dean was crying like a baby. I think the other guards shed tears too.
