Lew Dite with his banjo uke and kazoo
This has been a winter to remember here in Quebec, not quite a record snowfall (that happened in 1971/2) but only a few centimeters short of the record and the winter is not over yet.
I am an avid skier (both downhill and cross country) but on February 6th I slipped on some ice at the top of my outside stairs at my home in Montreal. I fell 10 stairs to the sidewalk below and probably broke a rib (even though it didn't show on the xray) and certainly severely traumatized my internals. The doctor said it would take 6 to 8 weeks to recover. In the meantime my ski season is lost. My downhill ski pass sits unused as I watch all this white stuff fall around my ears.... oooooh! so sad!
I wrote this song to the tune of Deep River Blues (see my video of this great song that Doc Watson taught me to love)

DEEP SNOWFALL BLUES (a true story)

Chorus:
Let it blow, let it snow
Let the white stuff grow and grow
Cause I got them deep snowfall blues
Let it drift, pile up high
Let the snow reach the sky
Cause I got them deep snowfall blues

Verse 1:
I can't ski, I can't slide
I can't toboggan ride
Cause I got them deep snowfall blues
Stepped on ice, fell down the stairs
Doctor says I need repairs
Now I got them deep snowfall blues.

Verse 2:
With all this snow, I can't ski
Ain't no one to cry for me
Now I got them deep snowy blues
My season pass to go downhill
Sits on the shelf, while I sit still
I got them deep snowfall blues.

  • Sheer brilliance! A masterpiece! Too bad about its inspiration, though... hope you're feeling much better now!

  • Thanks for those words... Actually I got to ski a few times at the end of March beginning of April (after 7 weeks recuperating). See my video "Back Skiing Again"

  • You say it is a sad song but it made me smile throughout - it must be the helmet and goggles about which I'll make no comment. OK then, I will: You remind me of an alien which appeared in one of your films some months ago (which was almost as funny as your two shower songs).

    Get well soon!

We haven't seen your Johnson ukulele for a while?

  • I thought my kazoo sounded extremely anguished.... have you no sympathy?

P.S. the alien's name is ooubi and he appeared in "Satisfied Mind"

P.P.S. I'll check out my Johnson ukulele and see what I can do.

  • PS - does it ever get warm up there?

    Maxine wants to know.......

  • To see the same location in summer go to:

    Lew Dite's birthday

    and

Lew Dite family day at the office

  • You just put a big smile on my face, even though that was a sad song my friend.

  • I just had a vision of you gettin' loaded and trying to drive a Cadillac to Norway and dying from a hard fall out a hotel window with an expired pilot's license in your pocket. Let me know if this is your fate so I can hock my visions for cash.

    Great song.

  • Hello

    Lew...

You are making me very envious! What I wouldn't do to get to some snow. I actually have to travel North to Cobleskill,NY to get some proper snow. I tell you,my snow shoes haven't seen any of that 'white gold' for quite some time now.

Your unfortunate experience served as some mighty fine fodder for a wonderful new folk ditty. Many thanks for sharing your original composition and execution thereof.

    Peace,

    Snowball

  • Great song! I just got back from Ottawa and there is a ton of snow there....I couldn't even imagine Quebec ;)

  • I love it. I sang with you thanks to your lyrics to the side.

    LP

  • Hi there darth skiffle! Get well soon! Thanks for the excellent song and great images. Ruben

  • I'm all confused, I thought we were experiencing global warming. ;-)

    Hope you get well soon!

    5 stars from me. :)

  • Sorry to hear about your accident. Though you can't ski or toboggan, at least you can sing about it. And you can catch up next season, whereas people like me NEVER have the chance!

  • LOL nice!!! That's so sad :(.

  • I think the fall might have shifted your memory banks just a little...the record snowfall year was 70/71.

As for your season pass..perhaps Ooubi can use it.

  • Oh yes... we have four, very distinct seasons. In July and August 35 celsius (95 fahrenheit in your neck of the woods) is not unheard of. At the other extreme, in mid winter we can get -35 celsius (-31 fahrenheit). In the autumn we get spectacular colors in the foliage and spring (after our winters) is always sweet, sweet, sweet....

  • Hey Lew - Maxine & I know that falling down 10 steps couldn't keep you down! Glad you're doin' OK. Come on down to South Carolina - it's 85 degrees & we have the air conditioner on!!!

    WT & Maxine

  • Oh, I could feel your pain. I'm so sorry for you. What a tragedy. How evil the snow is for falling so temptingly while you cannot go out and play! On the bright side, you survived, wrote a great song, and there's always next year.

  • I am glad your are keeping better care of your health. it is nothing to joke about.Great video. Thanks for sharing.

  • lol that was great I loved it! Good thing you wear your helmet when you play the banjo uke and kazoo, otherwise you might hit your head and start doing crazy & weird things....
