In this tutorial I'm discussing the basics of MIDI, Kontakt 3, Sibelius, and getting them all to talk to each other.

If you have a 64 bit operating system or for some reason Midi Yoke does not work, you can get LoopBe, another virtual midi cable that I now use that works very well.

  • One thing you dont explain is how to make Sibelius see Kontact. There seems to be not one human that knows this?????? How the fricken hell christ allmighty do you set this up????

  • @marktwainisgod That's because Sibelius doesn't "see" Kontakt at all. You have to install a Virtual MIDI cable, in this example I used Midi Yoke. Then in Sibelius you set the output to Midi Yoke 1 (or whatever number you want) and in Kontakt you set the input to Midi Yoke 1. The idea is simple. It's like hooking up a cable between the two.

  • @ProjectNReSource Thank you much for your reply. I had kontact4 working (by accident) in Sib5 at one time without hooking up any cables or MIDI Yolk.I tried to change to Absynth and now I get no sound. My Sib5 "sees" Kontact and Absynth but when I type a note into Sib5 (with Kontact) the meters move in Kontact and I am able to change my sound file but no sound comes out. If I switch Sib5 to General MIDI then I get the usual generic sound. Somehow Sib5 IS seeing Kontact but I get no sound. Thanks

  • @marktwainisgod Ah, well that is a completely different method and problem entirely. Versions of Sibelius beyond Sib4 use a different method. As far as I recall, it uses a sort-of VST system where Kontakt would be a sort-of plugin, whereas my method uses the two applications independently. I don't use Sibelius 5 so I'm afraid I can't be of much help, sadly :( Look into the application "Jbridge" for another way of using your VST's and look into Sibelius sound sets. Sorry I couldn't help more :(

  • This video is very helpful for me as I've been mystified for a long time on how to use Kontakt 4 and get to work with Sibelius and Cakewalk. I use Sibelius 6 though... hope it works though.

  • @hyde78chan

Glad it's helpful! It's quite a bit different for Sib 5 and later. I'll try to do up a tutorial sometime soon detailing the process. Good luck and happy composing!

  • @piojoarg10 It depends on the version of Sibelius you are using. In Sibelius 5 and later, they really screwed up the system (in my opinion). There's no easy way to do this in Sib 5 and later and quite simply there's no way to do it period with any sort of virtual midi cable such as Midi Yoke.

If you have Sib 4, it's just like it is in the tutorial. 16 channels for each Midi Yoke "port". In Sib, set the port and channel to correspond with each port and channel in Kontakt. Hope this helps :)

  • First of all, thanks a lot for doing this man, it's really clear and it's the only vid that finally solved this mistery...

I write and arrange for Big Bands and I wanted to know what is the best way to link different channels to different sounds, for instance...

each midi-yoke out and in corresponds to one sound? what if I have 10 different sounds, how do I link them and tell sibelius which sound corresponds with which staff....

  • How do you set up sibelius to work with kontakt?
