  • She sounds like this at 67. I could never sound like that at any age. She was great!

  • She did sound much better ten years prior for her Metropolitan Opera debut. Many critics seemed to think that her voice was already in decline but I'm not so sure. She was wonderful even then though Rudolph Bing didn't give her the role of Erda later in the 50's because her voice was "no longer viable". How sad.

  • Just.. Beautiful.. She sounds like she KNOWS who she is singing about!

  • Stunningly beautiful. Such spirit in her voice. Such power...

  • This is actually my favorite Marian Anderson recording. This was her final studio recording of spirituals and she brings to them a lifetime of experience that no other singer can bring. Past her prime? So what, its the interpretation of the text and the meaning of the spiritual here that is so important.

  • @PatroniFan Such stupidity and unprofessionalism; wait until one of the greatest singers' voice starts to decline then invite to the Met. Yes, her voice had started it's decline and it angers me. However, a contralto hitting these notes at 67 is remarkable!! What America missed by not recognizing her and her great talent (more stupidity by the ones in charge at the time). such a gracious lady, always humble and never complained about what happend.

  • That back in the day tone. I love it we need it more, that generation is dieing out.

  • beautiful voice

  • Her voice always sounds so much better when she lets the trappings of opera training (of the time she was trained) go and just sing. I adore her always.

  • WOW WOW WOW!!!

  • Beatiful voice, soul and woman.. she was outstanding!

  • John Motley at the piano! Years later he went on to be the Director of Music for the Board of Education for NYC, and the second director (after Dr. Wilhousky) of the All-City Chorus.
