In which case Ubuntu would be great for him. Take a moment to set it up for him and he'll NEVER be able to damage it in any way. My grandmother (78) uses Ubuntu 8.10 and my mum (52) uses openSuSE with a config that I set up for her. When either of them have trouble I remote desktop into their machines and help, but that's only when they need a program they don't have yet. Windows is too easy to break for newbie users.
