Without even realizing it, musicians had come to depend on Bowie(!) causing trends behind the scene. The chessmaster, for most of the 70's decade, almost single-handedly pre-anticipated and caused other artists to branch off of his innovations. This quality puts him a category all his own. As a catalyst, as a producer of fresh style and imagination to shake up a linear society, that usually swallowed one style at a time, caused mutations that branched off in fractal patterns that retrace to him.

Bowie's best talent was NOT his ability as a musician, which was only adequate. Let me get up on my soapbox. Ok. THAT'S better. His voice was GREAT in its own right, but even that, ONLY because it was attached to his greatest, UNEQUALLED talent, which was his VISION of SOUND. He could ENVISION the correct production of his songs as his INTELLECT grasped writing them, ANTICIPATING the FUTURE of his own music first, and then seeding that sound into modern culture. First INFILTRATE, then INFLUENCE.

@kevtruth He shook up the world! He shook up the world! And yes, he really did (even if most of the world was oblivious, wasn't ready to know it or admit it at the time). Even today, most see Bowie as a mere curious footnote in rock history. Kev, truth is, as we know, Bowie launched us into a new culture of embracing experimental individuality, by sheer undeniable results of a respected one-man genius! Astonishing to think that WE have a Bowie for inspiration. Mostly, HE had to be his OWN hero!

@MrMajorTime Damn straight. Even artists that went on to have good careers like Elvis Costello said "Low" and "Heroes" influenced what he and his band did on "Armed Forces"

Bowie's "success" here was not necessarily immediate as far as PERCEIVED cultural impact. Sales for the Berlin Triptych were initially "Low". But his subsequent legacy has gained momentum over the years to be realized as infinitely more influential, and definitely more brilliant, than originally thought. Go figure. So, yes, agreed, ULTIMATELY successful. This music will live on while most imitators will be one-hit-wonders as Gary Numan or Flock of Seagulls, or have even worse fates in obscurity.

Bowie's first venture into the punk/new wave scene. Successful, as usual.
