I have a "crappy little" Mahalo and I must admit it is not the best uke but it isn't bad for the price and it is great for travel because my other one costs a lot more so having a mahalo means I can travel with it and not be as hurt if it gets damaged and it sounds fairly decent for the price.
As far as nylon strings most modern ukes have nylon strings even my fancy one does.
