Cracker actually came from the slave days. The man with the whip came to be known as the "Cracker"
-
@ElJeficitoTheSequal A "cracker" was what someone from the south was called...the name implied they were hillbillies.
-
so they resurrected it for jail inmates, not based on racism, right ?
-
@ETsEvilTwin but doesnt this song suggest that blacks were put in chains anyway ?
-
@jschuler53 not a jackie wilson song, a fan
-
sam cooke was one of the all time greats..his voice is simply heavenly, smoothe..I am a Jackie Wilson song, they covered many of the same songs, each distinctive..Sam has beauty, happiness, all that is good, he was a strong civil rights advocate, even more, for peace and tolerance for all like MLKing..that he was able to get these harsh messages across through his talent is awesome
-
@RogerHWerner you must be joking...not at all outdated...we still have a long way to go for racial equality..if you read and believe the stats on the video as late as the mid 1990s they RE-instituted the chain gang method of work for men and added it to female prisoners...and, as someone said here, you cannot assume that everyone in prison is a hardened criminal and, nobody deserves this
-
@Albyyy31 interesting point I never thought of when listening to this song, but I see it differently...I had only been thinking of the prison chain gaings...

Cancion de mis favoritas una de las mejores

@xcraig1961 Yeah... because no one innocent's ever convicted of a crime.
It's not about race, for God's sake. There is little wrong with breaking the backs of criminals, because they broke society. Make them work; make them plant flowers, break rocks, build a school-bus....etc. This is a classic song, but the message has aged; the video suggests racialism; that is outdated. Criminals belong in chains; they should break rocks; they should plant flowers, and do so in chains. In a line if necessary....?

This is a fucking great old song. Sam Cook, what a singer. That man could sing the phone book and I'd listen to it.
Oh, and what's a cracker? As a Caucasian, I'm assuming I am one but I have no idea what it means.
