People's Assembly on Climate Justice - Saskatoon

For more information visit:
http://www.canadians.org/assemblies

The next major round of UN climate negotiations will be held in Cancun, Mexico from November 29 to December 10, 2010 and the stakes are high.

This past summer has seen severe wildfires in Russia, devastating floods in Pakistan, mudslides in China, droughts in the Sahel and Niger, and an 87-square-kilometre chunk of ice break off from Greenland. These events are all consistent with climate change patterns that climate scientists have been warning us of.

The media is already reporting that the possibility for a legally binding agreement in Cancun is slim, and the Canadian government continues to obstruct real action on climate change at home and abroad. The Canadian Senate recently killed Bill C-311: The Climate Change Accountability Act from becoming law without even a debate.

It is the collective voice and action of people in Saskatoon and communities around the world that will help make climate justice a reality. Let's meet, talk and start to take action locally in Saskatoon for climate justice!

A People's Assembly is an interactive process that provides the opportunity for people to listen to and be heard about what climate justice means to them, in their community, regionally, and globally. It is not a speakers panel or a public forum, it is a movement-building and organizing tool, a gathering of people to discuss and analyze climate justice, and a space to discuss demands, commitments and visions for how things could be different.

Only the collective strength of all our movements can achieve the global response necessary to confront the climate crisis. We need all of our voices -- young, old, new, experienced, settler, Indigenous -- to be there.

On December 7, it's YOUR turn to talk! JOIN US!

Organized locally by the La Via Campesina, National Farmers' Union, Next Up, Canadian Youth Delegation to Cancun, and Canadian Climate Justice Network.

Endorsed nationally by the Council of Canadians, Indigenous Environmental Network, Canadian Youth Climate Coalition and KAIROS.

Background on People's Assemblies on Climate Justice

There was an international call-out for People's Assemblies on Climate Justice from the Reclaim Power action that took place at the same time as Copenhagen climate negotiations. A People's Assembly, attended by thousands, was held in the streets and brought together many voices to counter what was happening inside. The assembly featured diverse voices speaking to both real and false solutions to the climate crisis.

The World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba, Bolivia (April 2010) represented an historic gathering of social movements -- a significant assembly of peoples -- that produced clear demands for solutions to the climate crisis.

With the success of the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba, social movements from all over the world have begun to cross-pollinate their efforts to forge an urgent movement for Climate Justice that demands governments respect and protect the rights of climate-impacted communities and our planet, Mother Earth.

During the Cancun negotiations, and in solidarity with La Via Campesina's call for "a thousand Cancuns", people's assemblies will be taking place across Canada and around the world.

Day and time: December 7, 6:30pm - 9:00pm
Location: Amigos Cantina Back Room - 632 10th St. E, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Kevin Millsip's Bio:

Kevin is Co-founder & Director of Next Up. In 1998 Kevin co-founded Check Your Head an organization that has worked with over 40,000 young people to get involved in global justice issues. He served as the Executive Director of CYH until 2009. In 2004 he co-founded Get Your Vote On -- a campaign that registered 20,000 new voters for the 2005 provincial election in BC. He's dabbled in municipal politics where he served as Vancouver School Board (VSB) Trustee. While on the VSB he drafted one of Canada's strongest policies protecting students from advertising in schools, worked to increase student involvement in the VSB's processes and helped develop sustainability related processes.

In 2005 he began working on what would become Next Up and coordinated the first two years of the BC program from 2007-2009. Since May 2009 he has been dividing his time between the VSB where he's currently the Coordinator for Sustainability and in building Next Up across Western Canada.

P.S. He loves his rooftop garden and his blue bike.
