This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on ranging long-distance shots in the wind with an air rifle. In this tutorial, I show how to estimate target distance, as well as wind speed, wind direction, pellet speed and incline angle. All of this information will be applied in part 3 to show how to make complicated, long-range shots.

This hunting footage was captured February 15, 2011 in rural Wisconsin. It shows me hunting pigeons with my .22 PCP air rifle in very high wind (20-30mph or 9-13m/s). The gun used is an Edgun Matador .22 PCP air rifle, sighted in at 55 yards (50 meters). The scope is a Hawke Sidewinder 30 IR Tactical 6.5-20x (shooting @ 10x in this video). The pellets were JSB 18.1g, shooing @ 900fps (274m/s).

I take my hat off to you, Being an ex TA Soldier I presumed that the MilDot was for Firearms and not for Airguns, Having watched the series of videos explaining How to calculate the MilDot Range I am please to tell you that I am learning to use the MilDot Reticle for range estimation and Holdover and the like, I can also say that I have hit a 4.5" x 2.5" can at 98 Yards.

The calculation you use is much easier to use than others that I have tried.

    Keep up the good work

    Carl

  • @MrCareer707 Thank you, Carl. That is what I love to hear. These three videos were the most labor intensive I made. And, when I made them, I knew that they would not be as popular as the pure hunting vids, due to all the "maths". But, for those who really want to learn, I knew they would appreciate them. And, so, I appreciate your comment. Ted.

  • haha wen you said the next 2 minutes may be confusing i was like nahh i know all about this but the first minute just made me cry i was confused out of my mind

  • @iModpsp LOL - that comment was hilarious. In time, you will come to understand it all. :)

  • what do you use to record the footage?

  • @iModpsp Too funny! And, that's not meant as an insult. :)

  • This video was well done. You explained it very well. Thank you, and keep up the great work. :)

  • find out how tall grain bin is, and how far away it is. Square these amounts, and add them together. Find square root. You know now how far it is to your target! (Pythagorean Theorem)

  • Trigonometry, I knew there was a purpose for it all along!

  • @maclarn91 Definitely

  • GREAT VID!!!!! thanks for all the great advise

  • hey ted. i just saw a vidio of a guy with a .25 benjamin like yours and he droped a feral hog by hitting it inbetween the eyes. you really need to somehow find a way on your next vacation to a place withhog proablme to make a hunting vid with it.
