Young Stribling is my grandfather's first cousin (what's that second cousin once-removed?). Anyways, I have heard stories my entire life of how I resembled Young, but it was not until seeing this footage that I can appreciate my "cousin's" boxing skills. Thank you for bringing out this footage.
P.S. Cheers to Jack Sharkey's great-nephew...I think it is great to be able to experience these bouts even now. Back in that day, the best man always won (unless the fight was bought first).
lisburn?my grandad was from there trying to get a family reuion together for her 50th birthday next year.robert sharkey, my mum is lynette margarette sharkey
His early career was something of a sham, as he knocked out his chauffer in every tank town in the southern states. Billy conn was a league or two above him, and had a much more rounded style.
Great to see video of Young Stribling, he lived a fascinating life in his brief 28 years. He reminds me of another light-heavy who would come along in another decade,Billy Conn, although Conn was not a KO specialist. Similar build and styles though.
Incidentally, you cannot compare boxers from another era to recent fighters maybe certain eras or decades but not a different generation.
These men were the tops in there day and I think we should just admire and respect them for what they were.
Neither boxer appears to have a clear advantage in this particular video. But, there is some clever feinting and a good deal of rough infighting on display. Their respective boxing styles do not make make for an aesthetically appealing match. Sometimes that happens in matchmaking, nonetheless, these two heavyweight boxers were among the most talented performers in their era
W.L. was my great-grand father. Guerry Boone Stribling was my grandfather, I guess we're related Prefontaine! Stribling is my middle name :)

Stribling wasn't that hard a puncher either.

great upload
you can see Stibling's great counterpunching abilities in this. he was just too light to hang with true heavyweights. Sharkey's jab too strong
