hello molly,
i have an extremely great collection of old books that my grandparents gave to me. it was a set of The Britannica Great Books of the Western World collection (54 volumes). they are in extremely great condition just for the sole reason that they have never been read or opened. not once in 56 years.. they were published and bought in 1954. i started reading the first book and the binding is cracking. what should I do to make sure this doesn't happen to the rest of the books?
Matt

Hi Molly,
I work in a museum. Can I just ask if you are a conservator? And can I make up my own mix of linseed / lanolin or is best to buy through an archival supplier?

A friend told me to just use vaseline on my leather books. My father used to put some sort of treatment on his leather books once a month. What's your recommendation here? Is vaseline okay and how often should it be done?

thank you!
does neatsfoot oil (pure) over time hasten the decay of leather? I want to restore a pair of boots with pure neatsfoot....any ideas?

neatsfoot oil comes from cows legs, it doesn't hurt leather at all it is a natural lubricant for it.
lanolin comes from sheep and is also a natural lubricant for leather.
