Muzzle Brakes and Flash Hiders, Removal, Differences between the two and Installation. Also, the difference between a peel washer and a crush washer. I show roughly how to remove and then install a muzzle device as well as explain why I prefer muzzle brakes to flash hiders.

  • great vid.i was going to install a flashhider on my savage bolt action .308 but i think your right that a brake is better.the threads are 5/8 24 so ,any brake that has same specs. would work?

  • @redzonehunter69 If the bullet diameter and threads match then it should work.

  • Doesnt the crush washer, crush to make the snug fit?

  • @MrAvail18 Yes, it compresses.

  • if the break magically fit your ar without the need for any washers could/should you install it that way

  • @Glockcrazy19 No, unless you lock-tite the hell out of it. The washers act as counter-pressure which prevent the brake from loosening during fire. Luck would be having correct alignment of the brake with an unmodified crush washer. You could lock-tite it but I'd recommend playing with varying washers to get the fit. It's just better to have metal acting as counter thread pressure than just a chemical compound, my opinion.

If you mount one up in a vise and do it, you will see that you can in fact time the device correctly using just a crush washer.

You can crank on it until it lines up and not do any damage to any parts.

Check out the Brownells video on mounting a muzzle device and click the "Instructional Videos" link at the bottom of the page and under "Assembling Mil Spec & Free Float Barrels" click the third video from the left.
