By 1979 one tenth of London was like a desert - no industry, no infrastructure, few people and little hope. Then government created the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) to regenerate this once life source of the capital and the nation. But when it came to infrastructure the authorities backed away. The original design of the DLR was minimised so when finished immediately had to be rebuilt to the original spec..and cost double the original estimate. Reg Ward, the first Chief Exec. passed away recently, may he rest in peace. It was he who conceived the DLR and London City Airport. London should be grateful to him.
