Founded in 1829, the University of Cape Town is South Africa's oldest and most prestigious university, with more than 4,500 staff working across six faculties, and 21,000 students at its main campuses. UCT is the highest ranking African university in the THES - QS World University Rankings, and the only African university to feature in the worldwide top 200.

With a large and rapidly changing student population, the University of Cape Town (UCT) wanted to find a secure, user-friendly e-mail solution that could be managed easily from a central point of control. Novell® GroupWise® and Novell Identity Manager enable the automated creation and deletion of thousands of student accounts, saving time for IT staff.

One of UCT's priorities is security, and Novell GroupWise offer a major advantage in this area. Most e-mail solutions use the unencrypted SMTP protocol to communicate between the client and the back-end, which is vulnerable to hijacks and other malicious attacks. Novell GroupWise uses an alternative protocol, eliminating a potential network security issue.

As great as Novell claims to be with managing access, their email client is TERRIBLE. It's always down, or under repair, or not delivering emails, or bouncing them back to whomever sent them...I no longer use my UCT email address for anything because I actually need my emails to be delivered so I can keep up to date with my work!
