Fallout continues over the missile test conducted by Iran July 9th and 10th.
Iran fired nine missiles, at least one capable of reaching Israel.
Both US Presidential candidates called the action a dangerous threat.The test "demonstrates the need for effective missile defense now and in the future, [and this includes missile defense in Europe as is planned with the Czech Republic and Poland."]
"Iran is a great threat. We have to make sure we are working with our allies to apply tightened pressure on Iran."
Although some military analysts downplayed the threat and some experts question whether Iran even fired its new Shahab-3 missile as reported.
Secretary of State Condileezza Rice asserts the tests show Iran is a clear and present danger.
"I see it as evidence that the missile threat is not an imaginary one and that those who say that there is no Iranian threat against which to be building missile defenses, perhaps ought to talk to the Iranians about...the range of the test they fired."
Western European reactions have been similar.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini "The test clarifies what it is we're talking about. These are very dangerous missiles -- that's why they international community and not just Israel has an interest in blocking this escalation in a definitive way."
The German government says: "With this (new) offer, the international community has sought to increase cooperation with Iran and to build bridges. It is regrettable that Iran has answered this with a gesture showing ill will."
Islamic Republic officials responded that the tests show the country's military capabilities but not overt hostility toward the West.
Speaking at Friday prayer on July 11, Ayatollah Kashani said the recent missile tests were meant to show Iranian strength, not hostility toward the West:
(Soundbite): "Everyone knows that this legal exercise carried out within the borders and territories of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Many around the world have condemned claims that this war game is illegal."
While inside Iran, President Ahmadinejad spoke of the power of their missile tests: "The maneuvers demonstrated Iran's military strength and exposed the enemy's inability in attacking our country. In the future, they will see that our defense capabilities are hundreds of times more than what was demonstrated in the recent maneuver."
Russian reaction was also predictable; Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the Iranian missiles as weak and not a threat to Europe. He said the threat is America's planned missile defense system in the Czech Republic and Poland.
Lavrov SB: "It confirms our recent statements that the current idea of the US missile defense system in Europe is not necessary in order to monitor and react to specific missiles of this range."
Despite immediate reactions, detailes of Iran's missile launch tests at this time of the report, are still being questioned.
