@Hendrikdevuile I think he was referring to the law of emancipation of the Jews, 1791. Of course there was a social discrimination, but legally the french jewish citizens were equal before the Law. The historical context is correct, but perhaps the phrase "France was one of the few countries.." etc., is not very appropiate. But for many years France was good country for exile, specially during the progroms o East Europe.
"France was one of the few countries that did not discriminate against Jews". That is apart from incidents like l'Affaire Dreyfus, and much worse the later assistance of the French police and gendarmes in shipping off even the Jews who were French citizens to the Nazi extermination camps!
I think it's so interesting how both of David's brothers, the elder and younger one, have full heads of hair while he himself has clearly been balding for some time lol.
@jlaurson ...and he might well be a perfectly great French speaker.... but understandably wouldn't bring it out on an English TV program that would only need to re-translate him.

"...were born in a small town of Russia...."
Lithuania was always Lithuania...
like Latvia was always Latvia. Just because
a country like Russia occupied those countries...
did not make them Russian.
No more than Iraqi's, today, are American.
Or Bermudan's are British.

@candypoppy10 I think 14mm2 is referring to his French-accented English that suddenly breaks out in Paris, not his laudable attempts at French. :-)
