Spirit AeroSystems enlisted some high tech virtual help to launch its 500,000ft2 new composites centre of excellence in Kinston, North Carolina on 1 July 2010. The launch contract for the facility is from Airbus for the A350 XWB. Spirit has a contract to build Section 15 of the fuselage, a 65ft-long, 20ft diameter fuselage section in the middle of the aircraft. Section 15 is composed of composite panels: A crown, two sides, a keel beam, a forward lower panel and two lateral junction panels. Spirit is also providing the two floor panels for the section, work the company is subcontracting out to Alliant Techsystems in Utah. Spirit Kinston is also under contract to build the composite front spar of the A350s wings. Airbus expects certification and first deliveries of the A350 in 2013.
