Former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey discusses his self-identification as a "gay American."

-----

Former New Jersey governor, James McGreevey, makes a highly anticipated appearance in San Francisco to discuss his new memoir, "The Confession." The former governor discusses personal recollections of his political rise and fall, his spirituality, and his lifelong struggle to come to terms with the sexual identity he kept secret for years.

McGreevey's new book traces his life through two failed marriages, his rapid political rise to the governor's office, and the sudden, public implosion of his political career. Governor McGreevey made history in August 2004 when he declared, "I am a gay American" on national television, and announced his resignation from office. The story made headlines worldwide - but what led to that moment was a human and political drama more complex and fascinating than anyone could know.

Moderator for the evening is Dudley Clendinen, New York Times contributor and co-author, "Out for Good: The Struggle to Build a Gay Rights Movement in America." This event consists of a conversation between McGreevey and Clendinen, followed by Q&A from the audience. The event, part of the "TimesTalks" Speaker Series, is co-presented by The New York Times and The San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center.

  • Well, one may be gay and not American and be equally self-deserving. Gay Americans are no better than Gay non-Americans. The way he puts it (and it is probably only a rhetorical faux pas), not being an American would be worse than being gay... For one, I think being gay is fabulous. And I also don't believe being an American makes you any better - only living in America probably gives you more leeway towards freedom of speech. Though not if you stay in the closet as he did for so many years...

  • Correction, it cures humanity. I don't think heterosexuals are immune!

  • There is no such thing as "gay american". Gays r sodomites, and sodomy is an abominable sin.

  • read about the gay New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey who resigned after he was targeted by Israel who assigned operative Golan Cipel to him. Cipel was part of the Israel Defense Forces and was planted in order to blackmail McGreevey into appointing jews to key positions where they could gain access to vital American technology and security files. Instead of betraying his nation McGreevey resigned the office and Cipel returned to Israel to be trained for his next mission.

  • Ridiculous comment.

  • hiv/aids affects more black women than gay men at this point. people being gay doesn't affect you, get over it.
