what school gives laptop to kids who can obviously afford one ,with so many school with kids that cannot afford pencils? if the laptop is given by the school she has no business using it to listen to music in the shower, in the first place, that they monitor the use of it is to be expected , now why would anyone remotely access the webcam is beyond me , some people dont have enough to do I guess .

Tobias: As you may or may not know, Lindsay and I have hit a bit of a rough patch.
Michael: Really? When did that start?
Tobias: Well, I don't want to blame it all on 9/11, but it certainly didn't help.

I think this is taking 9/11 paranoia, and post 9/11 surveilance authority to far! But would this be happening had 9/11 not happened?

This is disgusting. If the teachers want to monitor their students' behavior to ensure they're not causing trouble, why don't they got off their fat asses and actually teach rather than install cameras on kids' computers?

@ao2dk2dp Your absolutely right on with the technical details of the book but if you know PC security it gets you to where you need to look and remember what level of security your looking for, as he said there will be no for sure or perfect security until we change to "out of band signaling", but that would require revamping the WEB or NET. I have more info for you but that will have to be at another time.
Good luck

@mgore90 This is absolutely a breach of trust. Let’s hold the individuals responsible for this unethical behavior. The sysadmin who installed this program was fully aware of the capability being provided. At the high school level, do we really don’t expect the teacher or the admin staff to completely understand the ramifications of this kind of technology? Technology and the risk it brings is just another area were parents need to be educated so we can protect and educate our children.

@James1toknow Except of the personal attacks, I violently agree with MOST of your statements. Webcams CAN be activated remotely; the educated know it’s possible. Thank you for the book recommendation, it’s a good read, but skimpy on gross technical details (for my taste). Obviously my annoyance with the level of computer security ignorance in the video was evident from my post. We need to prosecute the unethical, unprofessional sysadmin who installed the remote application, not the taxpayer.
close it

Sadly, most of these people are not educated enough to own a laptop. Who is unaware of the vulnerability of web-cam and speakers? Who is unaware of the basic vulnerability associated with a computer connected to the internet? Seriously, who leaves a laptop with a web-cam connected to the internet in a "private" setting? Maybe the princess and her mother should understand the technology and associated risks before they start using it.
