A great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) feeds on a grey seal off the south tip of Monomoy Island, Chatham, MA on August 22, 2012. Shark was easily 15' long and was previously tagged by Dr. Greg Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

    It was a rare opportunity to see such a magnificent creature up close. We did try to keep our distance though and were concerned about the risks you noted. Therefore, I had my family stay up on the flybridge of the vessel and out of harms way. Great view up there as well!

    A white shark is not going to go out of his way to jump onto a boat. They are drawn to humans in the water because they look like marine mammals or darting fish (the flash of white from a swimmers hands or feet). If a shark was to jump onto a boat, it most likely happens because the boat is too close and it is attacking its prey (seal, fish, whale). I don't think they went out knowing a white shark was attacking, they (including the daughter) were most likely there already.
