It's not a special gun or anything, they are just over-filling it with gun powder to make it far more explosive than it's supposed to be. It's a prank.

They're just not holding the rifle properly. The buttstock firmly to their shoulders. Effect of this is that the stock is striking their shoulders. If you pull the rifle tightly into your shoulder the force of the recoil is chaneled through your body instead of into it. It still hurts, but it doesn't knock you off your feet or knock you senseless.
