China is on course to join Japan and the US as a leader in the art of animation.

Zhongnan Animation, is one of China's top animation studios — but fledgling at only 5 years old.

There are approximately 1,000 employees working there and trying to compete in an industry dominated by Japan and the United States.

As Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports, it is a lucrative market and China already has an audience of 265 million children as potential viewers.

  • It won't be anime. Anime is the JAPANESE word for animation, just like cartoon is the American word for it. They better think of their own name. :/

  • The Chinese needs to target a market within Asia and promote Asian centric cartoon. The large population in Asia is enough to catapult any industry. Japanese cartoons are really white looking, which is sad.

  • China you can't increase your Hard Power untile you have some Solf power.

  • very nice .. two thumbs up =) ..

  • i have seen soem chinese animation and it's good

  • @SaiKoSeSu Also, you people who hate China because of what they see on Fox News or because of how their government was over thirty years ago, should "shhh". No country is perfect, but China at least deserves *some* credit for having stuck around over 5,000 years, and remains a powerful global entity. That's pretty freaking spectacular. I, an American, have never been there myself, and most other Americans who blindly hate on them never have either. They're still people like you and me.

  • @MomoTheStrange Animation with actual moving stills was invented in China by Ting Huan (zoetrope)... there would be no anime without him. Besides, in Japan, anything that is animated is considered "anime". They use the term the way we use "cartoon" to refer to anything animated that isn't Japanese, even though it's all the same thing just with different styles of drawing and storytelling. I like anime myself though, and I'm not bashing Japan or trying to make Chine seem "superior".

  • Once manhua becomes marketed.. It will just be as good as Manga if not better whether Anime fanbois agree......

  • Manhua originated before Manga .......

  • 0:45 epic face

  • the Japanese word manga is from Chinese characters 漫画 manhua, if you know the two languages.
