In this drum lesson we are playing five two bar phrases keeping the same snare drum and bass drum pattern. Changing either the ride cymbal or the hi hats in the second bar to create a polyrhythm.

In exercise five we are phrasing single strokes between hands and feet around the drum kit with a quarter note hi hat ostinato and in bar two playing the hi hat every three sixteenth notes.

you can change the 'audience perception of the tempo/pulse' using polyrhythms or changing sub-division while keeping the same or even changing h- hat/bass drum spacings - metric modulation.

    Hope some of that helps

    Dear Dans,

I am a saxplayer , and i want to write to four sax based on polirythms. do you know any horn player that makes this work. I liked your example, supposing a rhythm melody and the tenor makes the " hit hat " changing or the baritone . what i want in my composition is to change the audience perception with poly and after return to normal rhythm. What do you think?
