MSX - Usas (1987) - Pegu Ruins 1-1

"The Treasure Of Usas", referred to as "Usas". Back in 1987 Konami made this beauty of a platform game. Lots of action, very good graphics for that time and outstanding (3-channel) PSG music. The only real downside I can think of is the frustration you feel of missing yet again one of those difficult jumps.

This could have been a good sidescroller if the MSX only had better hardware support for that.

The story deals with Wit and Cles, two adventurers who are on the path of finding the Treasure of Usas in Rangoon, Birma. They have to collect secret stones, hidden in treacherous ruins, by solving puzzles and beating enemies.

That's as far as the plot goes. The gameplay is another story. I will elaborate on that in the next movie.

I played it a lot ,and yes, finished it on the original MSX2 (only with its 4 "savepoints"!) Today, with emulation, it is easy, but then... The scores are all sort of a masterpiece. No external soundchip! No samples! Just 3 channels! And one of the channels is shared with sound effects like "shooting", "getting hit"... And the whole thing - program, gfx, levels, sound - is put into itsy bitsy 128 KB! Was a game programmer then myself. The MSX guys of Konami outdid all of us. Sort of magicans.
