firstly NAZIS were political party, at first they didnt want to exterminate the jews however this changed as we know as it is today, german military yes were fighting to defend but many of them belonged to nazi party+ belived in hitler and his "aryan race" policies etc..., you also got to look at why people liked his ideas at the time in germany to understand the whole of it, nd yeah only a number of handful people stood up against hitler in germany

I want to see Eichman! The man who played Wilm Hosenfeld in this scene plays Eichman in the new movie ^^! I loved this movie btw.

Well there was a difference between the Nazi's and the German Military. The Nazi's (SS soldiers) were there to exterminate the Jews and control the land in which they had conquered. The German Military were simply soldiers obeying orders, most of them did not hate Jews but were simply fighting to defend their country.

Yes. I have researched the story. I also saw the film Polanski made some interesting changes. But, as many have posted here, most of what was in the film did take place.

pix042,

Hauptmann (captain) Wim Hosenfeld was Wehrmacht. He protected and saved several people during WW2.....I have just seen the film here in Vienna and the son of Szpilmann was there and he told us about it.....

Ah, have you researched this? Please see my recent comment on this video. So, the German was a captain. Do you know if he was SS? The piece is so touching.

I am trying to ascertain what rank this German soldier was. Realistically, he would need to be a 'classical' music lover to appreciate the excellent piano playing, anyway. This would suggest that he would need to be an officer (even in the SS, if this is and SS soldier) to appreciate the playing. If it was a non-music loving German soldier (especially in the SS) he would be even more likely to turn the 'Juden' in to the appropriate authorities.
