I want a dog that won't leave my side or lap while I'm at home but can handle a few hours everyday with the rest of the family while I'm at school. I want an obedient dog that is not too hard to train. As i mentioned already I really want a dog that has lap dog traits. Should I get a West Highland Terrier or an English Cocker Spaniel? I'd prefer answers from people who own either of the breeds. Thanks.

I do not own a Spaniel... but from what you're describing, a West Highland Terrier or any Terrier is likely not for you. Westies are very independent and not laptdog material.
