Leonid Iogansen' Biography
Born in St. Petersburg Russia in 1981, Leonid Iogansen started playing violin at
the age of seven. Since that time, he has performed at numerous venues in the United
States (where he moved seventeen years ago), as well as abroad. In 2001, Leonid
premiered Alexandra Fol's Violin Concerto with the Boston University Chamber
Orchestra and Richard Cornell conducting. Mr. Iogansen has won several competitions,
including Young Virtuosos International Competition in 1999, which resulted in his
performance in Carnegie Hall the same year. Besides a performer, Leonid is also a
frequently commissioned and performed composer. He has written much solo, chamber
and orchestral music. In 2006, he was commissioned by the renowned violinist Keng-
Yuen Tseng to compose a Fantasy on the Themes by Bizet, for violin and piano. In
2005, he has performed his own Violin Concerto with an orchestra at Peabody
Conservatory with Francis Scully conducting. Lukas Foss hailed Leonid's compositions
as "really amazing... very musical and very professional." In the Summer of 2006,
Shuang Yin International Music Festival has commissioned Leonid to compose a
number of humorous pieces for various chamber ensembles as well as the Festival
Orchestra, adding up in length to an hour of music. The pieces were performed by the
distinguished faculty of the Festival and broadcasted on Taiwan's National Television.
Leonid has conducted the Festival Orchestra in performance of his Hymn to Taipei, for
string orchestra, written for this occasion. He had also joined the faculty of the Festival
as the second violinist in the performance of his Poor Beethoven for a string quartet.
Leonid is currently working on an opera for which he is writing a libretto himself. The
ideas of the opera deal with the fate of human nature in the Western World.
Leonid Iogansen is also an artist and has won many competitions for painting,
local and national, both in Russia and the United States. In 1997, he received the Gold
Key Award at the Boston Globe competition. Fifty of Leonid's works were accepted to
the fund of the National Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, some of which were
exhibited in the States.
Leonid holds a Summa cum laude Bachelors of Music in violin performance and
composition from Boston University, where he was a Trustee Scholar in 2001-2003, and
a Masters degree with the same majors from Peabody Conservatory. Leonid studied
violin with Dana Mazurkevich and Keng-Yuen Tseng, and composition with Samuel
Headrick, Richard Cornell, Martin Amlin, Charles Fussell, and Bruno Amato. Among
Leonid's peculiar hobbies are learning Chinese and hang gliding.
In addition, Leonid is also a dedicated teacher. Currently, he is on the faculty at
the Music Conservatory of Westchester in NY and at Biryukov Academy of Art and
Music in NJ.
