I really don't like using an emergency blanket for a primary shelter.... they have other uses that are better suited for them but the reality is that a lot of people carry them and think they make a good shelter, when in fact they don't. They can augment a shelter and work well to reflect heat, or to help provide some additional overhead cover, but not really strong enough for a strong storm or any real amount of snow. But if that is all you had and you were going to build a shelter with a cheap thin mylar type emergency blanket, consider the tips in this quick video to make them a "little" better. I also go over a couple of other uses for the emergency space blankets as well. One wise ass night I decided to take a 4 mil black plastic slice and some para and build a tarp shelter thingy and weather the storm I knew to be on the way. Set the tarp and the hammock then built a fire on an old satellite dish to keep out the water and waited for the storm. Forget sleeping in a 45degree rain I spent all my time moving from spot to spot trying to stay warm. A 4m sheet of plastic deflects a lot of heat to your back I was surprised how warm I was. I built the fire under tarp.
