Macs get less malware because they're for the most part untargeted. However Mac OS X is not maintained as well as Windows because almost every open source part of it (and there are quite a few parts because it's a Unix OS) is old as shit. Linux, BSD, and other Unixes are developed non-stop and MS actually makes attempts to guard the glass jaw that Windows has, but really can't fix Windows because it uses a monolithic kernel that just gets crap piled onto it instead of a modular one.
