thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you so much!
I really needed this help, i've been composing for just over a year and though i can effectively create ideas which i think sound nice, i usually find it difficult to set them out within a chord progression and then develop them and a lot of the time i feel like my ideas are wasted due to the lack of knowledge.
I look forward to future videos, i might finally be able to complete some proper compositions given practice.

Wicked! I admire you. After being stuck with five of my melodies for over seven months I finally made a breakthrough thanks to your tutorial. You should really write a textbook or something... wait a second, you said you sell DVDs didn't you? This tutorial definitely helps all the smart people who just need to get some sence of direction in their creative work. Really helpful. Thanks for everything.

This is the very FIRST tutorial on composing that has actually helped me. Thank you very much for your clear and meaningful explanation of chord progressions and melody construction.

awesome tut. thanks for posting :-)

the chord progression from the beginning sounds like the piano progression from secondhand serenade's fall for you x)

im a beginner pianist and i want to right my first song and i want to use those chords in my song but i dont kow how to play them could u tell me
The tutorial is good. But there's a lot of why's left unanswered. Why those 4 chords sound good together? Why those notes on the right hand? There is a lot of theory behind, and you're just not putting any of that out...
It's just my 5 cents, and less than a beginner.
Still, thank you a lot for the tutorial ;)

Hello there, these tutorials are meant to leave a little unanswered as I want people to by my DVD on composition which is done in much greater detail, it goes for 2 hours. But in saying that even if you buy the DVD I will be putting videos up here that can be learnt as extras that will help along when learning from the DVD.
OK onto your questions, those 4 chords sound good together because they are all taken from the same scale, so you could pick any 4 chords from any scale and they should...

go fine together, the only chord I wouldn't recommend using at first is the 7th chord of the scale, a half diminished chord, so it's much harder to get sounding nice. I think the video already tells you why you use those right hand notes, you start off with notes from the chord, any melody notes that are taken from the chord should sound great, then on to the in between notes, as long as you pick notes that are from the scale you should be fine, that's the basics that you need for this video..

so in order to compose a nice melody and chord progression like this that's all the theory you should need, as long as you have an ear for what sounds nice and what doesn't you'll be fine :) hope this helps

thank you Ben for sharing ,very good information,I am not a beginner musician and I find it easy to start with good ideas, but my bigger obstacle is developing a whole tune satisfactorily....for example, how do you develop a B section, etc
Thanks,Lou

Great to hear, and yes that will come in the next video as I say in the end of this video about how to add another section. So keep watching, I'll have it up by next month, but if I get the time maybe even earlier. I have a list of subscribers from my website that I ask what they want so I'll be putting lots up here over the coming months.
