For a while Monday morning, a machine acted as the heart and lungs of 16-month-old Eric Boykin. Today, the Stoughton toddler's body is doing all of its own work, recovering from open heart surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children.
The surgery Eric underwent is relatively rare for children with ventricular septic defect, a hole in the heart. While the defect is fairly common in babies, in about half of the cases the condition corrects itself without surgery, said Dr. Jeffrey Meyers, head of pediatric cardiac surgery at the Boston hospital.
