For those of you who didn't have the money and your villagers died: I found this tip online and worked for me:

I did the job where you are a musician (lute hero). As you play a few people return. Build your relationship with those people and if any of them are shop owners spend money to help the economy. I basically went to each town that had the lute job and played and played and made friendship/friendship and spent spent. It too some time but eventually I got everyone backed and they liked me!
