Performed by the Vepsian ensemble Keväz'vezi.

The pictures were taken by me and friends mostly last summer in Karelia near the city of Sortavala.

  • What country is this again.... Hungary? Can't! Sounds ancient Indian/Mongolosian. Earth cry in the distant sun. I'm feeling a sudden chill!

  • Republic of Karelia, North Russia.

  • In addition to what Bezmolvie and BaboonBro said, Vepsian is a Baltic-Finnic (or Finno-Baltic) language, which also includes Finnish, Estonian, Livonian, Votic, Karelian, etc.

The Finno-Baltic languages are a branch of the Finno-Ugric family (on the "Finno" side, Hungarian and others make up the "Ugric" side), which is one of the two branches of the Uralic family (the other being the Samoyed languages of Siberia). Google "Vepsian Society" for more information about the Vepsian people. :)

  • BaboonBro, sorry for the delay in replying. I'm glad for the info regarding the geographics of this earthy-cry music. It's both great and different,

  • Gorgeous! Thanks, Bezmolvie!

  • The Vepsian is one of all those Fenno-Ugric peoples (lingually related to Hungarians & Samis & Estonians etc) that became moved and push away on & on during world wars.

    Geographically like bezmolvie says.

I adore this melancholy: the voice of the Taiga.
