A short video taken on the morning of Wednesday 24th August 2011, showing Hovertravel's AP1-88 Hovercraft "Freedom 90" visiting Littlehampton in West Sussex. This was a special charter (their other craft still operating the normal Southsea to Ryde route) whereby Hovertravel were operating a service between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton as well as offering pleasure trips from Bognor Regis. Due to the amphibious nature of the craft, it was able to come up onto both Bognor and Littlehampton beaches, and as such, caused much interest for the tourists, residents and Hovercraft enthusiasts! For more information on Hovertravel and its operations, please visit the following; http://www.hovertravel.co.uk/ For those wondering why on departure the skirt appears to deflate when on water - in Hovercraft terms, this is called "Getting over the hump". It means that if a hovercraft slows or starts from a dead stop over water, the air cushion forces the water down and creates a bowl effect in the water's surface. The hovercraft must then climb out of the bowl. With the water displaced, a small wave is created in front of the craft's forward (bow) skirting. The craft must climb over this "bow" wave (hump) before it can reach operating speed.
nice vid and good to see so many people who probably have never seen a Hovercraft in action befor ';-)
