The minutes before the first whistle of the tense quarterfinal of the 1970 World Cup at Azteka stadium, Mexico, where tiny, but great football nation Uruguay, world champions of 1930 and 1950, took on Russia, with the population approximately 100 bigger. The Russians were favourites and they had played all three previous matches in the tournament there.

Interesting for Uruguayan followers, the National Anthem "Orientales La Patria o La Tumba" ("Easterns, Fatherland or Grave"), the longest anthem in the world, was unprecedentaly played all four and a half minutes, instead of usual two, which is long enough, and longer than any other anthem played before an international game.

  • @enplay plus Mundialito!!! ;-)

  • this is don't russia-this is USSR-ukrainian,russian,georrgian players

  • @kievlianin1961 do not consider any country as "USSR", as I am against that name, of political reasons. As you can see, the English commentator of the game only mentioned the team in red as Russia. Ukraine and Georgia were part of the empire of Russia before the start of bolshevik's dictatorship and they only gained full independence 20 years ago.

The modern Russia is also considered as an official successor of the former "Soviet".

No slightest disrespect to Ukraine or Georgia

  • You have to admire Uruguay...a country of just 3.4m people yet they won the World Cup in 1930 and 1950 and were semi-finalists in 1954 and 1970...they have also won the Copa America 14 times while Penarol and Nacional have won the Copa Libertadores 8 times between them...they have also given us fantastic players like Nasazzi, Andrade, Schiaffino, Varela, Ghiggia, Rocha, Cubilla, Francescoli and Aguilera...Uruguay demands respect in football

  • this is one of the great teams in football history. Uruguay 1970. Best goalie in the world 2 world cups straight.

Im from Scotland and my nation of 5 million brags worldwide for just being able to compete with greats. But Uruguay has won all of the titles over and over again.

    14 Copa Americas

    6 WorlD Club cups?

    8 Libertadores

    4 World championships.

  • Russians were getting impatient

  • It seems that something must be explained: Although Uruguay won the World Cup only twice (in 1930 and 1950), the FIFA allowed Uruguay to use four stars some years ago, because recognized the Olympic titles also as world titles. Thus in fact Uruguay can say today that they were world champions FOUR times. - Concerning the national anthem of Uruguay, I think that the Soviet players hadn't been informed before that this anthem could last a long time and the same melody be played at least twice.

  • @VotanteSerio typical soviet paranoia

  • Esa metedura de pata con los himnos también ocurrió en el México '86. Tocaban el mismo himno dos veces y luego pasaban de tocar el segundo. A los rusos le robaron el himno y el partido.

  • russia is fag
