  • did not read all the posts but mite be a stuck egr it will make it go rich like that take a hand vacume pump like they sell at vip draw vacume with the pump and release a few times then new plugs if it works

  • @king9968 Thanks, I have the engine out and I'll make sure I check the EGR, thanks!

  • I have a 2000 s10 blazer with the 4.3, it just started making the weird noise when I crank it, the loud noise. The check engine light is not on. Did you find out what the problem was?

Please reply if you found the cause of that rattle.

  • @themadmek01 There was 2 noises, the rattle was just a loose muffler clamp, the knock, I believe was the torque converter. I have the engine out and all the bottom bearings are good but the truck suddenly wouldn't move. (converters will make a pounding sound before they go and usually go suddenly) I don't have it back together yet to know for sure but I am replacing the torque converter.

  • @MudRFunR Thank you for the info, One thing I remember form the one I had with an engine like that one, the injectors did at one time stop up with carbon, I used carburetor cleaner, and a nylon brush to clean them up, then I did the same thing with the intake butterfly, make sure the seat is clean, On the front where it initially goes down as you open the throttle, that has a tendency to build up gunk also. Keeping those clean will also increase your MPG.

  • @themadmek01 Not too worried about gas mileage now. Just last night we decided that this is going to be my wife's mud truck. Gettin it ready in the spring!

  • @themadmek01 P.S. thanks for the info, I will check the injectors and throttle body.

  • you should NEVER rev a stone cold engine like that.

have you checked the flex plate for cracks? had very similar noises coming from my bf's Dad's Astro (bf's Dad's? does that even sound right???)

anyways...after a bit of searching, it turned out that the flex plate was cracked around all the bolt holes.

i wouldn't worry about a little lifter tick when it's cold, every 4-3 i've owned has had a slight lifter tick when started from a "cold start" (i've had 8 1st gen & 2 2nd gen S-series trucks)

  • Injector junk

  • sounds like a loose timing chain, or leaky fuel injector
