One way rainwater harvesting is interpreted and done in India is to use it for recharging the shallow aquifer.
Here the gentleman uses open well water only for drinking and cooking purpose as per his religious belief. He now is faced with a situation that due to deeper bore wells coming up in the neighbourhood his 20 year old well is drying up.
He has tried deepening it..now he uses rooftop rainwater harvesting to recharge the aquifer. It does help but in this case only partially since his aquifer is being overdrawn by the surrounding borewells.
Now that rainwater harvesting is made mandatory in Bangalore hope fully there will be enough recharge to ensure that this shallow aquifer does not dry up.
