According to Legends from Scotland, Ireland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland, Selkies (Seals) are in fact Humans, some of whom have committed suicide by drowning themselves at Sea.
Sometimes the Selkies come ashore, take off their fur, and become as humans. The same story about a Farmer who hides a female Selkie's fur and forces her to marry him, is known from the Faroe Islands, Scotland, Ireland and Iceland.
This is a Faroese Ballad, telling the same story.
