In this second video I interview Edward Booth of Goolwa, South Australia and get to be a passenger in his converted Subaru Sherpa. This is the second in a series of videos which will follow the progress of the conversion of a Holden Barina (Suzuki Swift) to electric drive. For more info see www.evric.kestar.com.au

  • Thanks for all the videos - very entertaining, and i learn a lot!

At around 4:50 Edward is doing a gearchange, and it sounds like there is a clutch invovlved, because the engine revs a bit. Am i right?

I know you can spare the clutch, which gives the advantage of simplicity plus loosing the weight of the flywheel, and probably better efficiency. A clutch on the other hand would spare the gearbox synchros, and make changes faster.

    What do you think?

  • Edward did leave the clutch in. This is optional. If you decide to leave the clutch in, you must ensure that it is in good condition or fit a heavy duty clutch because of the very high torque available from the electric motor.

For my conversion, I decided to remove the clutch - the main reason is, you don't need to use it much anyway. - just leave it in, say, third or fourth gear and drive all day. If you need to change gears, you still can, it just takes a little longer without the clutch.

  • what sort of cost would someone be looking at to do a full conversion like this? as my dad has a suzuki mighty boy and is looking to convert it.

i was also interested, is the motor really only 8HP? so does this mean that the electric motor needs less power then the original petrol motor because wasn't it more like 30HP?

  • The conversion cost on top of the donor car cost would be approx. $7000.00. The 8HP is the nominal rating. The max. rating could be up around 40HP.

  • The motor is an ADC #K91-4003 6.7" 48-96VDC 8 HP Single Shaft. The controller is an Alltrax AXE 7245. That means 72Volt and a max of 450 Amps, which is what Edward is using. Batteries are Deka AGM 100Ah rated. There are 6 x 12volt batteries.

  • what is your range on a single charge

  • I will check with Edward in regards to the range he gets. He has done two conversions. Subaru Sherpa and a Fiat X1/9.

  • Thanks for the reply.

If I am going to make an EV i think I will use a clutch. In a normal petrol car you can also still shift gears, but it´s slow, and hard on the gearbox. Going down a hill for instance, I would like to go to neutral, to disconnect the engine. This is very easy to do clutchless, but when you want to get in gear again, you have the problem. Maybe you have to rev. match the engine to the box, and both speed and time is lost.

  • ok, thanks heaps for your response. It's quite a lot of money, but i guess it will pay itself off eventually.

  • Good Job. The weak link in this Subaru is the Altrax controller. 72 volts is a little low. To bad because there is still space under the hood for extra batteries. Also 6-volt batteries would give more range than 8-volts.

All in All, a pretty nice job!

  • What is the voltage rating of the motor used by Edward and what type controller is he using and its AMP rating?
