I believe the practitioner sensed the master's uplifting from the ground by his feet, and hence, managed to avoid the swing. If this is true, then this has nothing to do with a special sense, but rather more to do with sensing vibrations which every person can.

So you think this test, from a still sitting position, is meant to be a similar situation to a kendo match do you?
What you are seeing here is not a fight, it's the demonstration of a certain sense. In a kendo match you don't start by sitting still in seiza underneath your opponent with your eyes closed! Naturally the cut is big here; in a fight, with your eyes open and standing and facing the opponent, someone who can pass this test and react before they think is at a tremendous advantage.
