Although Rosalyn Sumners and Elaine Zayak dominated ladies skating in the early 80's, there was a group of interesting ladies just underneath them that (with a great performance) could have challenged the leaders. I used to call them the "Gang of 6". Each had strengths and weaknesses, and rose and fell on those merits.
Kelly Webster was a lovely, free skater. Maria Causey came from a long, family tradition in the ice shows. Melissa Thomas was a strong "figures" skater, and Jill Frost (well, Jill Frost was Jill Frost)....a spritely strong free skater with innovative moves and something of an artistic bent!! Here, in the National Sports Festival, she skates for what I believe to be the first time a girl 'dared' to appear in black tights (pants).....such a rebel!!!
Jacki Ferrell and Priscilla Hill round out this distinguished group!
I am sorry this audio is so messed up. Somehow the soundtrack to a new musical "Chicago" was recorded over the video! It is strangely fitting, however!!! ---You gotta see mama, everynight...or you won't see mama at all!!!!! Would that these lovely girls could 'bloom' again!! (sigh)
Maria Causey, Jill Watsun, and Marie Stroukoff
are my coaches in ice-skating..
