I made this desk to go over the tread mill we already had. I put the desktop on a set of rollers so that I could bring the work to the center. Total cost to me was about $30 since I had some of the wood and got the rollers for free at the junk yard.

  • Actually, I took the desk apart. I walked longer and longer on it until one day I walked for 6 hours. The next day, my knee hurt and it hurt for weeks. I just stood on the treadmill for a few weeks until I finally built a little platform over the treadmill and put a stool on it; hoping my knee would feel better and I could get back to walking.

  • I sat on it for weeks but I felt that hanging my legs off of the stool kept my knee from getting better so I took the whole thing apart. Now, I sit in a chair. One side note, I had damaged that knee back in the '80's but it never bothered me until walking for 6 hours.

  • Wish you would give more details on the 'sliding' dealio, but seems easy to figure out. I think I really *need* to do sthg like this for cardio health/ muscle tone, but he says "until the novelty wears off" - that scares me. Will I hate it after 6 months?

I'd need 2 work areas for this - another one for my primal vegging-out desires.

  • By novelity wearing off, I meant that I can only tell the story so many times until everyones heard it.

I still walk on it but not nearly as much as before. One day, I walked for 6 hours, the next day my knee hurt and it hurt for a few weeks. I cut way back because I must have a weak knee.

The Lord provided the rollers I use to slide the desk. I was taking metal to the scrap yard and there were 3 strips of rollers lying in the mud. He gave them to me but they were exactly what I needed

  • I like your workstation there :D. But I'm scared I'll fall off the treadmill if I make the desk almost in the middle like that. Are you sure it's safe? And does sweating become a problem?

  • Hi, thanks for the comment. I've been putting in an average of about 5 miles a day on it since June and haven't gotten hurt yet. I set the speed to between 1.5 and 2 mph and don't even pay attention to my legs after that, they just do their own thing and I do mine. At under 2 mph, the only time sweating is a problem is when it gets hot in the room, I'm in the attic and I only have a small air conditioner. It makes a great conversation piece until the novelty wears off. Thanks again,

    Mark

I saw someone using a raised workstation using an exercycle, and am wondering if that would be easier on the knees. But wonder if cycling impedes the typing, reading process.

I want an exercise desk so so badly, but am agonizing over the right setup - seems that your sliding work area is important, but which exercise equipment?

I _wish_ someone could help me, as am going bats over this decision..!!

  • That sliding desk idea is brilliant!!

  • does the loud noise from the treadmill distract you ?? my treadmill distracts me but i still use it

  • Ah, thanks for the info.

I want to make or buy one now.

But will be careful to stop before injuring self.

Those kinds of injuries take a long time to heal.

However, I would buy *only*treadmill that is flat, no incline, and has no bars to get in the way, for 2 reasons:

    1. Flat means smoother motion w/ typing & computer work while walking at 1.5 mph.

    2. No bars: won't get in the way of the desk over treadmill. Speed controls are housed in separate unit. $800. (TrekDesk...? I think...)

  • wow i this good but isn't it hard??? imaging doing a serious thing on the computer will it be the same???
