@rubberbandsax someone asked about it in a masterclass i went to with him. He says it cuts out someone of the overtones giving a pure, single note tone. Especially in the lower register.

Yea, that's just a rag or small towel in the bell. Usually when sax players wanna tone down the volume, they stuff somethin like that in the bell. Maybe Mr. Konitz wanted to keep it down a bit on this concert, or maybe he plum forgot hahaha. Go Lee!
