Chemical Engineering Building, Birmingham University Campus

There is a room in the Chemical Engineering building on Birmingham Uni campus which has a set of lights going through the colour spectrum. This seemingly goes on 24 hours a day. This was filmed between 11pm and Midnight, late January. The music is 'Black Tape' by Circle, from the album Panic.

I emailed the department to ask what about this room - below I've reproduced the conversation.

Dear Chemical Engineering,

I'm a final year English literature student, and as I'm finishing university this year, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could clear something up for me.

There is a room in the main Chemical Engineering building which has a bank of lights going through the visible light spectrum, seemingly 24 hours a day. This room has intrigued me since it was brought to my attention early last academic year; and, without fail, whatever time I walk through campus (late at night or early in the morning), these lights are still on. It was one of the little mysteries that has made my experience at university interesting. Is there an ongoing research experiment taking place in this room? Or is it something else?

it's their groovie "study area" just got cool lights n some kidney desks in it. Nothing too exciting, looks good on the way back from the pub though doesn't it!

I have just finished studying in the department and asked the computer guy what caused it. It is not experiments it is just a funcky emergency light that changes colour. so not amazing story behind i im afraid!

That is a rubbish reply from the uni! Some post-grad messing around I would guess. Shame we will never actually find out...unless we sneak in there and ask various ppl, and possibly also steal their research.
