'Niel Gow's Lament for the Death of his Second Wife' performed by Sarah McQuaid live at the Perthshire Amber Festival, Dunkeld, 28 October 2008. The six finalists of the first annual Niel Gow International Fiddle Composition Award performed their tunes for the assembled judges (Fiona Ritchie, Dougie MacLean, Martin Hadden, Freeland Barbour and Mike Ward - quite an intimidating group to have in the audience!) by way of interval act for the show, so I thought I'd better do a Niel Gow tune in honour of the occasion. Many thanks to Roy Flitcroft for the video.

  • Sarah , I recently bought your dadgad book and have been working my way through it . I must thank you for introducing me to this tuning and i,m now hooked. I have even arranged and written a few of my own which you may be interested in .A couple of questions.....are you planning to publish another follow up book if not can you recommend any ? are you planning to do any gigs in scotland in the future ( I missed your falkirk one) . What make of guitar are you using and what gauge of strings .

  • @carnwath Thank you so much for writing! I've proposed a follow-up book to the publishers and am still waiting to hear back from them -- fingers crossed ... My guitar was made for me by Andy Manson and my strings are John Pearse medium gauge, .056 to .013 -- if you go to the Links page on my website you'll see links to both Andy's website and the website for Breezy Ridge which makes the John Pearse strings. Hope to see you at a gig down the road! Sarah x

  • this is one of my many favourite tunes and thanks for arranging and playing it so well Sarah. How i wish Scotland could produce more Neil Gows.
