Entering the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, we drove for 76 Km. to get to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Inside of the Observatory you have a lot of details concerning the earthquake in may 1980. Thirteen-hundred feet (400 meters) of the peak collapsed and 24 square miles (62 square kilometers) of valley was filled by a debris avalanche. Standing there, you get very pensive. To anderstand and to see this violence, come to the Johnston Ridge Observatory.
