@ericmarx2010 I'm not going to lie. I consider myself lucky to be where I'm at at times. My advise to any kid coming out of college is to try and sign up with some of these major companies that were talked about: Cerner, McKesson, GE Healthcare, MedQuist, Philips (for their iSite/iSuite product). I hear from friends that have been there, Cerner is a good starter. They have a lot of kids come in, work for two years, and then leave for a full time job at another hospital system at higher pay.

@ericmarx2010 Be familiar with your options in terms of EHR software. Amazing Charts offer a simple and intuitive interface for most physicians. They have a great user board too. SBS also has sharepoint. This is geared towards private practice. My guess the real money is in the big industry like hospitals and other health organizations. Private practice is a good place to start though.

@ericmarx2010 For private practices (small scale), these are typically, 1-10 Provider settings. Know how to use small business server. Health care professional definitely enjoy the idea of an exchange server (part of sbs) for inter/intra office communication. Since most email services like Gmail, Yahoo, etc. are not HIPAA compliant. The domain/client setup is significantly better than a peer to peer setup. SBS also gives them Remote Web Workplace, allowing them to remote control every computer.

bman49er and others - thanks for the tips. A LOT of IT folks ask us how to break into healthcare IT. If you or any others have real-world examples of how you made the transition, or general advice on how to get into healthcare IT, please share.

I'm Canadian and health care for us is free 100% and unlimited. But damn slow, in all aspects from the patients perspective to administrating the care.

For anyone looking to write their own ticket in the Healthcare IT world....know HL7. For those hospitals that are on best of breed systems (multiple vendors) interface knowledge is a must. That's my two cents.

If I never heard the phrase "meaningful use" again, I would die happy. We are done with phase one for the year, but phase two is just around the corner. At least we are ahead of the curve. As a clinical analyst, its my job security for at least the next decade for sure.
Are those chairs made from the carcasses of ALiEn spines?
