Just as we head into the season for vaccinations and flu shots, the AP reports that Japan has confirmed the nation's first case of a new gene in bacteria that allows microorganisms to become drug-resistant. The so-called superbugs or drug resistant bacteria are not new. The AP reports that many bacteria are resistant to antibiotics including penicillin. Continual improper use of antibiotics has made the problem worse and has resulted in new superbugs. The case in Japan was detected in a man who had received medical treatment in India. And the gene is known as NDM-1. According to a report in the British medical journal Lancet, "The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and coordinated international surveillance is needed." The AP reports that NDM-1 has been found largely in E.coli bacteria and on other DNA structures easy to be copied and passed onto bacteria. The superbug has been found in Australia, Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, Sweden and the U.K.
